I love it when you get a glimpse of what those extraneous bolt holes are actually for.

Oh, the SLS is a transaxle? So that means my Porsche 924 is practically an SLS!
Also, I bet that thing would sound glorious if they started it up without the muffler.

SLS naughty bits.

Purdy! That is definitely some drool-worthy photography, and a unique look into an awesome Benz.

Probably something akin to the Titans of Greek mythology breaking their chains and unleashing hell all over the earth, only less hellfire, and more glorious V-12 banshee howl!

...but the SLS has a V8?

Interesting that Getrag(?) don’t change the input end of the transmission to suit the car’s layout. The gearbox still leaves room for a clutch and flywheel and the troque tube has to open back up to the size of a bellhousing to mate up properly. Such bits of inefficiency to allow an existing components to fit always amuse me.

SO much seam sealer.

Well, shame on me. I had it pegged as a V-12, I just suck on MB auto knowledge. Pretty impressive V-8 compared to their own BiTurbo V-12, the choice in 8 vice 12 cylinders must have been influenced by FR weight distribution.

You’ve got it exactly right, it’s all about weight distribution. That smaller V8 can be tucked way behind the front axle. That 6.2L also sounds amazing, to boot.
As far as I know, the only NA V12’s that are made by Mercedes come straight from AMG and go directly into Pagani’s cars, not their own :)

It’s a shame Mercedes doesn’t make this anymore...
But then again, the price was stratospheric, and production was extremely limited.
The Benz V8s sounds simply magnificent, and I had to look up the SLS as my own reference comes from the sedans.

There’s also going to be less stress on the fasteners and the casting by spreading out like that. Save money on redesigning a gearbox and have the side effect of not needing fancy ($$$) high strength components.

What happened to the trans that required it to be replaced?

All they told me was that the Odd (1, 3, 5, 7) gear clutch pack had a non-dealer serviceable fault/damage/failure. Which seems to be more widespread that I would expect. I’ve heard of at least 20 cases of transmission replacements at mileages from 2-3k miles to 30k in mine. In the 6 years since the SLS was launched, it’s the only common issue, the rest of the car seems bulletproof up until now. Which is a lot more than I can say for the AMG GT, where the current “common major issue list” is up to 6 or 7 things...and it uses the same transmission as the SLS, which means it might have another common issue down the road. I’m told the newer transmissions have gone through a few hardware revisions...we’ll see.

Well that's good to know the SLS seems pretty reliable, because damn it I want to own one one day, I love that car more than anything.
